Over the course of three months my theme has changed and evolved as new interpretations of a sense of play began to surface as a result of group discussions and introspection. To observe and play with an objects intended function took on a new role as I was introduced to video and performance art. Suddenly I became immersed these new unexplored arenas of imagination. I became very interested in the deceptive aspects of video making, controlling what people see and hear and manipulating the perspective of the audience to make a performance out of video also.
My first video project (project three), the circuit bending tutorial, is an example of this type of deception and manipulation. I used a youtube circuit bending tutorial as a reference for a realistic how to script, and introduced the fictional vangaalen capacitor (an artist who uses circuit bending with exceptionally fantastic results) and simply spliced in clips from his songs, fading them in and out in sync with the twisting of the capacitor. The overall effect was very convincing in its deception that simple circuit bending techniques can yield aw inspiring results. This, coupled with the enthusiastic reception of my peers, instilled a confidence with a new form of media.
My second video project (project four) was in as much a performance piece as a step forward in my thinking in regards to camera shots and post editing. I challenged strangers to race me through a painted maze in an ally way just off Bathurst Street. As the crowd grew the atmosphere become more enticing to passers by and by the time I left there was a crowd of complete strangers racing each other through the maze. The atmosphere was meant to simulate the effects of elementary schoolyard activities. When it is considered strange not to engage in these types of games with complete strangers.
Of course there were obstacles when working with new forms of technology. My third video assignment (project five) proved to be the most difficult to shoot and edit. Also I was using a type of camera I was less familiar with, and it was somewhat temperamental when recording, readjusting auto focus, or just stop recording altogether without pressing any buttons. Uploading videos can also be far more time consuming then I had assumed, unexpected errors etc. But I will only grow stronger and more efficient in producing my ideas, there are always obstacles. “today we continue to live and work, to labor and love, under the aegis of one tenacious assumption- that art simply is the most important thing”

Toys and puzzles have been present in my creative space since childhood; I am particularly drawn to the disassembling process, as I often draw inspiration from observations of an objects functionality. Lego sets have always been of special interest to me as I find them easy to disassemble and rework into new forms. I get a similar sense of enjoyment from model kits, though they are more restrictive to my imagination. I’ve recently become fascinated in the breaking down of toy instruments, shorting out their circuits to find new sounds, this process is known as circuit bending. To take something apart is to better understand its function. In this way I hope to explore the assumed limits of pre-existing gadgets and novelties, to expand on their existing options or purpose.
